Basics of Handicapping

When it comes to picking winners in sports, we aren’t talking about rocket science. It’s players who make the players and there are coaches who make the calls. Every game, someone or some team is going to do something that is either going to win you money or cost you money. Here are some basics of handicapping to keep in mind.

Bet your Head, Not Your Heart
It can sometimes be hard to separate the two, but bets have to be made with your head, not with your heart. It’s always a good rule to avoid betting on your favorite team, because you will usually have some sort of bias towards them. Even if you try to look at the games objectively, it can be difficult when there are such strong emotions involved.

Sport Specialization
There is no reason why you should go on betting each and every sport if you aren’t confident in your ability to hit winners in those sports. If you have a better knowledge of baseball than basketball, then have the patience to wait through basketball season. Successful handicapping is all about picking your spots and maximizing your advantages. When you try to bet every sport or every game, your handicapping will suffer greatly.
